Description

Cosworth GBA V6 F1 1.5 Turbo Engine for Sale

Product Overview

For sale is an extraordinarily rare Cosworth GBA V6 1.5-litre turbocharged Formula 1 engine, reputedly the lowest-mileage surviving example of this engine according to period Cosworth factory documentation. The engine covered just 41 kilometres during testing at Monza in 1987 — its only recorded competitive use — before the conclusion of the 1.5-litre turbo era brought an end to its Formula 1 programme.

Following the FIA’s ban on turbocharged engines in Formula 1 at the close of 1988, the engine was sold directly to a Cosworth employee, who subsequently converted it to naturally aspirated specification for use in hillclimbing — a process completed with direct assistance from Cosworth. The sole modification made to achieve this conversion was a change of pistons to raise the compression ratio. Every other internal and external component remains in its original GBA specification as built for F1 competition.

Included with this engine: A substantial archive of original Cosworth factory drawings and a selection of brand-new, unused period parts. This documentation and parts archive represents a rare and significant addition of independent historical, technical, and collector value.

History & Provenance

The Cosworth GBA was developed as the company’s entry into the 1.5-litre turbocharged Formula 1 engine landscape that defined the sport through the mid-to-late 1980s. The GBA represents Cosworth’s engineering response to the most technically extreme period in Formula 1 history — an era in which turbocharged V6 engines routinely produced in excess of 1,000 horsepower in qualifying specification, and in which the competitive demands on engine manufacturers were unprecedented.

This particular engine’s history is both verifiable and exceptional. Its only recorded competitive use was during testing at Monza in 1987 — covering a documented 41 kilometres — before the programme concluded ahead of the FIA’s forthcoming ban on turbocharged engines, which came into force at the end of the 1988 season. The mileage figure and its source location are supported by period Cosworth factory documentationincluded with the engine, providing a clear and traceable chain of provenance from the factory floor to the present day.

Following the end of the turbo era, the engine passed into the ownership of a Cosworth employee, who undertook its conversion to naturally aspirated specification for hillclimbing use. Crucially, this conversion was carried out with the direct technical support of Cosworth, ensuring that the work was completed to a professional standard consistent with the engine’s origins. The only internal change made was the substitution of the original turbo-specification pistons for items with a higher compression ratio appropriate for naturally aspirated running. All other components — internals, ancillaries, and external architecture — remain entirely as originally built for Formula 1 competition.

The engine is accompanied by a large archive of original Cosworth factory engineering drawings relating to the GBA programme, together with a selection of brand-new, unused period parts. This supporting archive constitutes a significant collection in its own right and is of considerable interest to engineers, historians, and serious collectors of Formula 1 technical material.

Condition & Originality

With the exception of the pistons — changed to accommodate naturally aspirated running — every component of this engine remains in its original Cosworth GBA Formula 1 specification. The engine has covered only 41 kilometres from new and has never been subjected to race distance, prolonged high-load running, or significant mechanical stress.

The level of originality retained in this engine is exceptionally rare among surviving examples of late-era F1 turbo machinery. The combination of documented low mileage, near-complete original specification, factory-supported post-F1 conversion, and a comprehensive accompanying archive makes this one of the most complete and credible GBA engines likely to be offered for private sale.
